Paulita Pappel is a porn director, performer, founder and author. In her book „Pornopositiv – Was Pornografie mit Feminismus, Selbstbestimmung und gutem Sex zu tun hat“ (Porno-positive – What pornography has to do with feminism, self-determination and good sex) she also explores the question „How do you actually watch porn?“. Although many might think this question seems to have a clear answer, the author shows why it is worth asking yourself this question.

What is ethical porn?

Pappel focuses on the aspects of ethical porn. So the question must also be: How SHOULD we actually watch porn? What is important to consider if I want to contribute to ethical porn? Paulita Pappel describes what ethical porn consumption means and outlines important aspects of ethical porn and healthy porn consumption.

How to watch porn:

I. Paying for porn instead of watching videos for free or visiting platforms that offer porn without a subscription or other payment. This is usually due to piracy or unfair conditions.

II. Get to know the performers, directors, platform providers or other people involved: Many people who are involved in porn introduce themselves these days. On social media, their personal websites or via press appearances. For example, through “About” sections, behind-the-scenes material or personal testimonials. When searching for social media channels (e.g. the Instagram account), it is best not to search via the platform, but to use a search engine (e.g. Google, Safari, Firefox) to enter the name of the person or company and the name of the platform (e.g. Paulita Pappel + Instagram). This avoids possible shadow bans of the accounts (accounts that are not displayed in the search results or suggestions). Certain platforms, such as Instagram, do this for certain account content or people.

III. Maintain a healthy porn consumption: The quantity is not the decisive factor here, but how you feel about it. For example, is your consumption compulsive? Do you feel that it is affecting your sex life in a negative way?

Now, where can you get good porn?

The porn industry is very big and there is a lot of material. It’s worth taking a look outside the mainstream. And it’s also really worth paying for it. Many platforms also offer educational videos and tutorials. Our editorial team has collected some favorites and compiled them here:

CHEEX

Erika Lust

Lustery

PinkLabel.tv

Ersties

It is also very worthwhile to go to porn film festivals. There are now annual (e.g. Pornfilmfestival Berlin) or biennial (e.g. PorYes Award) festivals in major cities. But individual new films are also shown in small cinemas from time to time (e.g. Erika Lust UK Tour). The nice thing about such events is that you get a good impression of why porn can also be valuable in terms of art, content and culture.
